GIS-based Valuation of Ecosystem Services in the Lower Delta Plain of West Bengal with Special Reference to Indian Sundarbans

Abstract The Indian Sundarbans partly hosts the world’s largest mangrove forest and support livelihood of almost five million people. Holocene delta was formed by river Ganges. decay distributaries Ganges in deltaic West Bengal began with eastward avulsion rivers now stand disconnected from their sources therefore do not get a significant amount freshwater upstreams. people depend on services ecosystem which is directly linked to upstream flow, rainfall groundwater. scarcity during dry seasons, high salinity surface water soil, siltation drainage congestion are major constraints security this area. biodiversity also threatened stress. To ensure sustainable conservation rich well-being Sundarbans, improving region extremely essential. From perspective, present study aims identify flow-dependent estimate value those using geoinformatics. land use cover (LULC) maps have been prepared for years 1990, 2000, 2010 2020 Landsat images valuation services. Accuracy assessment has performed high-resolution satellite field data. Change detection analysis done understand changing pattern LULC-based carried out 2020. area under each LULC class multiplied global Ecosystem Service Value (ESV) that calculate total ESV specific class. reveals ESVs highest bodies including rivers, estuaries followed forests. With decreasing flow deteriorating health, ecosystems changed drastically.
